PANAJI: The Andhra Pradesh high court recently held that courses run by
deemed universities under the distance mode of education and recognized
only by the Distance Education Council (DEC), are not valid if the
University Grants Commission (UGC) along with other agencies have
not given their approval. While disposing a bunch of
petitions filed against deemed universities such as the Institute of
Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Rajasthan, Vinayaka Mission
University, Salem and JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University, Justice L
Narasimha Reddy observed that "The DEC, is not conferred with the power
to accord such approval on its own, particularly without reference to,
and consent of, the UGC. " This could affect students of the
IIAS School of Management located at Miramar and Porvorim, as the
institute claims to be affiliated to IASE.
