About Deccan Education Society’s Fergusson Centre for Languages
Fergusson Centre for Continuing and Distance Education (FCCDE) was started by Deccan Education Society (DES) with a view to offer courses which are autonomous, i.e. not affiliated to any statutory affiliating body. The idea was to have a platform which could provide (1) need-based short-term courses at a short notice to any one – be it an individual or an organization and (2) instructor led class-room courses as well as (3) web-based course material / study material
Under FCCDE, an institute for languages
i.e. ‘Fergusson Centre for Languages’ was started with a specific goal
i.e. to provide good and affordable training in various languages.
Importance of learning foreign languages
Just a few decades ago students for the
S.S.C. would opt for foreign languages like French or Garman with the
sole aim of scoring high marks. After matriculation, the subject was
forgotten! A few enthusiasts, in those days, would study French at
'Alliance Francais ' or German at ' Max Muellar Institute '.
However, as India became more
industrialized, and technical contact with other countries increased,
the importance of a foreign language as part of education became
apparent. German & Japanese were at the fore, especially for
translations of technical & service manuals.
As India, slowly but surely, began entering the global mainstream, there began a steady increase in the travel of students, professionals and technicians to various countries, and the learning of a foreign language became a necessity as a tool for social contact.
Now a lot of students learn German,
Japanese, French, Korean, Spanish, etc., having realized that this gives
them the opportunities to study or work abroad. As communication &
travel technology advances, & the world becomes a global village,
there is a lot of cross- exchange of people internationally.
However, learning a foreign language is
not just a classroom bound exercise. It should also mean getting the
knowledge of that country's history, geography, culture, and an
interaction with that country's people.
With the above in view, FERGUSSON CENTRE
FOR LANGUAGES has been conducting several courses & exchange
programmes over the past few years. The Centre caters to the various
needs of the youth aspiring to make a mark in today's emerging global
scenario.
The languages covered here include
German, French & Japanese for all, & English for foreign
students. The obvious objectives are knowledge & improvement of
communication skills. Besides this, it is advantageous today, to be able
to converse & be proficient in a foreign language if you are hoping
to be on a high managerial post in a renowned company. There may be
foreign collaborations in the offing - when perfection in the language
is sought, not to mention the heavy pay packet. Also different cultures
& tradition can be seen & experienced first- hand here.
The activities.. 1) Certificate &
Diploma courses in German, French & Japanese. These are conducted in
the evening so that more students can avail of them to supplement their
basic qualification.
2) International Exchange Programmes for
students & teachers in collaboration with various German &
Japanese Educational Institutions. This includes interaction between
students/teachers of respective countries, as also visits & foreign
study-tours to Europe & Japan. One such prestigious project is being
carried out between Fergusson Centre for Languages & Japan's
Gekugeikan High School, Okayama.
3) Business French Diploma
